By the Dawn's Early Light
It's 4AM and no, I'm not just waking up. I haven't been to sleep and finally that's OK with me.
Not so long ago I lived in terror of not being able to sleep at night---so of course I didn't. My insomnia-anxiety nearly ruined my health and made my disposition decidedly unattractive. Or so they tell me.
My family assured me that not sleeping wouldn't kill me, but if the situation didn't change, they would. Clearly we needed a plan. First, there would be no more conk-out pills. Then something would have to be found to keep my brain positively occupied.
My brain. You know, the one with a life of its own, completely independent of my body. My brain, the one that is convinced I'm still 35 years old and, as Carole tells me, that thinks the world is my business.
My kids suggested, "Why don't you just turn on the light and read?" Read? I didn't know from reading. The only things I'd ever read outside of work were the sports and news. Since I wasn't interested in philosophy or the single-electron theory--the kind of books we have here at home, I figured I would go to the public library to check things out, so to speak.
I decided it made sense to look at books in my favorite subject: the law. I've always wanted to be a lawyer (that's another story) and I love mystery so I checked out two books by Scott Turow and one by John Grisham.I was hooked!
Before I started blogging I was up to a one-book-a-day habit. But I've cut down now that I spend several hours blog-surfing and writing. So even though it's 4AM this morning, sometimes I actually fall sleep many hours earlier. And that has to be a good thing for me---and my brain.
I just found this pic of my grandchildren's cat. It has nothing to do with sleeping or reading but it has a lot to do with laughing...and that also has to be a good thing for me and my brain!

Lucy, this is one of the joys of being old. As you don't HAVE to go to work and get up in the morning, whether or not you sleep at the same time as other people doesn't make any difference. ;)
Your post made me think of one I started months ago on the same subject and didn't get to post because then other things came up.
So thanks for the idea of my Sunday post ;)
And thanks for being a faithful visitor!

I think your attitude toward sleep is very healthy. I've always had a cycle that's out of kilter with the rest of society's. I was that way even as a kid. Consequently, I've never put much stock in what anyone else has to say about the "proper" bedtime or the "correct" number of hours of sleep per day. Who are these "experts" to say what my unique needs are?
I've learned to treat the occasional sleepless night as simply a gift of more time to do the things I want to do. I'm 39 and there are never enough non-working hours in the day, so I take them where I can get them. And if I'm tired the next day, well, maybe my body will have a little better sense the next time and pay attention when I tell it that it would be a good idea to get a little rest, right?
Love your blog! :-)

Claude,
I'm honored to be your visitor! You are such an artist and pure soul and I haven't met many humble artists!
Yes, it's a well-earned perk of elderhood to make our own rules for our own sanity. I'm sure we're both thankful we have that privilege!
Love,
Lucyd

To my Blogpals,
Please forgive the loss of previous comments on this post. It's a long, ugly story and one completely beyond my comprehension. I have the comments in my archives...
thanks so much!

Thanks for posting on my blog. I laughed at your answer to the question about the lion's mane. Very cute. Also, cute picture of the kitty! I love people with a great sense of humor. Thanks for all the compliments. I enjoyed reading your blog.

My sleep cycles are making me nuts these days - and haven't found your equanimity about it yet.
I can rarely sleep past 4AM. I often get overwhelmingly sleepy at 9PM, but my body doesn't want any more than five hours sleep, if that much, so you see the problem.
I think the solution is an afternoon nap, but there's just so much to do...

Hi Lucy - I'm here from the Ageless Project. Love your blog!
I too am wakeful at odd hours and just roll out of bed to my computer and read blogs until I feel sleepy again. I have the advantage of being several time zones away from American bloggers, so there's always somebody out there posting away. It's a 24/7 world.
P.S. I got a kick out of your "Idi Amin School of the Humanities" line.
